Any college student who would sit rocking on his bed and humming for minutes on end is more likely a Touretter, although Sedaris never defines himself that way, and I've read everything he's written. She cites other writers or sufferers of OCD, such as David Sedaris, but I think Sedaris also has Tourette's. The two disorders are located on the same gene, but Tourette's has more bizarre and public behavior than OCD. It is quite well written, but I am curious about the author's research into the disorder: first, I would submit that her son had Tourette's Syndrome rather than strict OCD. This book is a riveting and scary book about an extreme case of OCD in the author's child. And on its own, this book brings clearer awareness to an illness that is often stigmatised. I understand that OCD and Autism are two separate conditions that might have overlapping behavioural symptoms. And if I may say so, a book that lifts the reader or those with friends or family suffering from OCD or Autism to just take it easy. But this book is charming and remarkably clever. And for a writer the challenges of writing narrative in first person, articulating personal traumatic experiences coupled with living the experience is exceptionally hard.

Laurie Gough is a remarkable and gifted story teller! Absolutely riveting! I loved it! A fitting tribute to her father’s death, and her sons illness from OCD. I was totally immersed and profoundly moved by such sweet devotion by a mother to help her child through the grieving process. This is a personal, very intimate story told beautifully with a poignant simplicity that shows the levels a mother will go to protect her child. A story that touches the core of human emotion.
